On June 15, 2016, the Lowreese Kingfish began to disappear.
For months, fishermen had searched for it, but in the past few months they’d never seen it again.
On June 12, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced the Lowrie Kingfish was dead.
The Lowrie is a small freshwater fish that lives in the upper Gulf of Mexico.
The Fish and Game Service called it a “major species loss.”
“The Lowrees are among the most elusive freshwater fish in the Gulf,” said Michael Ritchie, the Fish and Livestock program director for the Fish & Wildlife Service.
“They’re rarer than most of the fish in this area and they’re the last of their kind.”
The Fish & Game Service has been tracking the Lowreses for more than 50 years, and it’s estimated they live about a half-mile south of the town of Largo, where they were first discovered in 1972.
They’re often mistaken for the kingfish, and are sometimes mistaken for other smaller fish, such as blue crabs.
But the Lowreys are more than just small fish.
They’re the largest freshwater fish found in the gulf.
Their size and size are what makes them so elusive.
It’s not easy to spot them.
They live in large burrows.
They can’t be seen from the air.
And, for the most part, they don’t seem to be interested in food.
Many fishermen are trying to catch them for themselves, using nets and nets of their own.
Loretta Soto, the fishery manager for the Lowrellis, said she’d never heard of them until this past fall.
But she said they’re “the most important species of freshwater fish.”
I just wanted to find them, Loretta Sotos said.
I never expected to find one.
I had never heard anyone say anything about them.
I don’t know how to describe it.
They were my life.
I always thought, Oh, wow.
I’ve been doing this my whole life.
They are so elusive that I don`t know how I’d ever know anything about it.
I’d never thought of them that way.
Soto was able to track the Lowrey down.
When she and other fishers caught the fish, they were shocked to find they had no teeth.
Soto says it took her three days to find the lowrey.
We didn’t have any teeth, she said.
She said the fish had no eyes, and that they were very small.
The Lowrey is a species that has a relatively small mouth.
And the fish that live in the high tide zone, or the upper waters, can only be seen with a boat, and even then, it’s not possible to see them at close range.
The fish are found deep in the estuaries of the gulf, so it was hard to get close.
I had never even heard of the Lowrees, Soto said.
This is the first time I had heard of this species before, she continued.
I just wanted it to be found.
I thought, This is a rare fish.
I`m glad it wasn’t a bigger one, because that`s what I was hoping for.
Sotos has been working on the Lowree for more to two years, helping with the recovery of the fishers and keeping track of the population.
She said it’s been a frustrating experience.
It`s been very challenging to track down these fishes.
They`re not like the other fish.
They aren`t just about feeding and feeding and nothing else.
They have a real life.
The lowreses are a big, beautiful fish.
It took me awhile to realize they were so elusive because they`re very, very, small.
I have to do a lot of work with them to get them back.
After the fishermen found the Lowries, they tried to locate them, but Soto didn’t know where to look.
There was nothing I could find on the internet that was helpful, she added.
Luckily, there are other sites that can help you find them.
A small group of fishermen called the Lowrezos have formed a group called the National Lowresseers to help keep track of their species.
They meet in the Lowreras Chamber of Commerce on the Fourth of July.
They use a small handheld GPS device to track their fish, which they call Lowreies, and send it to Soto’s office.
Soto said she’s very excited about being part of the recovery effort, and she hopes to help find the Lowrea Kingfish.
