The WA Aquaponics Story
From humble beginnings in 2017, WA Aquaponics was started by two guys with a passion for sustainability, efficiency, and above all, responsible business. Beginning in a single greenhouse of their own construction, WA Aquaponics has grown into a small, self sustaining, organic farming operation with multiple structures and proprietary growing technologies, bringing in new people along the way.
Today, WA Aquaponics grows various fresh herbs and distributes them to the local Seattle area. If you have any questions about our operation or are interested in purchasing any of our produce, contact us and we will be sure to respond quickly to any requests you may have!
By definition, aquaponics is a system of aquaculture in which the waste produced by farmed fish or other aquatic animals supplies nutrients for plants grown hydroponically, which in turn purify the water. Essentially what this means is that the plants are able to derive all of the nutrients they require for growth and survival from the waste of the fish, and the water is at all times kept habitable for the fish due to the filtering from the plant roots. It is a self-contained ecosystem. The primary inputs into a system of this nature are the fish food, small amounts of water, and little else, making it completely organic, as no fertilizers, pesticides or growth hormones are necessary.
Furthermore, aquaponics allows plants to grow quickly and healthily, due to the high amounts of nutrients they are able to derive from the system, as well as the large bacterial colonies that they feed off for survival, also produced and maintained by the fish. Because of these factors, this creates an incredibly robust system that can withstand rapid scalability and a high turnover of plants.
More specifically, our aquaponic farm is able to grow herbs from seed in as little as 30 days, and to harvest enough to deliver fresh every morning. This results in a rapid and effective production of a high quality product that can function year round regardless of seasons and weather.
